Is global warming really happening?

Over the last 25 years there has been a dramatic rise in temperature all around the world. After 2 decades of scientific and political debate, there is now an overwhelming amount of evidence that this warming of our planet is due to a human activity such as deforestation and burning of fossil fuels. These activities have led to increasing levels of greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere. The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) which is made up of hundreds of the worlds leading scientists are agreed in the negative impact that human behaviour is having on heating up our planet, and all governments agree with their conclusions

The most common of the greenhouse gases being released by human activity is carbon dioxide. Oil, gas and coal are all fossil fuels which have been storing carbon deep in the earths crust for millions of years.

The mass burning of these fuels by modern industry has released vast amounts of this stored up carbon into the atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide – C02.

Almost half of CO2 emissions come from the energy we use every day at home and when we travel. At home we release CO2 into the atmosphere through our use of electricity, gas and petrol. So using our fridges, freezers, microwaves, ovens, lights, heating, televisions, stereos, cars, buses, trains, taking airplane flights - all release CO2 into the atmosphere.

What’s the effect of greenhouse gases?

car exhaustThis C02 and other greenhouse gases are so named due to their ‘greenhouse effect’ on our planet. The gases act like a layer of glass around the earth and, much like when you walk into a greenhouse on a sunny day, keep the heat from the sun in . Whilst we need these gases to keep some of the solar heat in (if not the earth would be a frozen wasteland) the vastly increased volume of these gases that are being released is thickening the glass effect and keeping more heat in which is warming our planet.
